[Interview] Koyar
Interview with belugachop, aka Koyar!
—————
[Origins]
Q: Tell me a little about yourself and how you got started creating illustrations and comics. How far should I go back with this question? The first time I “tried” drawing comics was in high school when I finally met someone who reads the same shoujo manga that I read. I was responsible for the drawing and...

koyar: I like to fold and then staple, so I’d know where I’m supposed to staple. I find it easier this way. I think most people do it this way.
But if I’m using the long arm stapler, it has a paper stopper and a ruler for measurements, so I don’t need to fold before stapling.

Binding 101: Stapling
One of the most needed tools in making your own book is the stapler.
The obvious solution is the long arm stapler. We all want the mighty long arm stapler for simplifying our lives, but buying that one stapler seems expensive. Instead of trying to buy one for cheap on ebay or whatnot, we can use just the average stapler.
So you have your pages ready, your stapler filled with staples, and...

[Tutorial] Digital speed lines (photoshop)
Making speedlines in Photoshop. I’m sure that MangaStudio Ex and Comic Works already have automated functions for this…?
Create a new blank document. I’m using 600dpi
Add noise to blank canvas. Amount I chose is arbitrary… depends how dense/closely packed you want your lines to be.
I do this step because a 1px noise-generated dot on a 600dpi canvas = is...

Preparing comic for print (process talk)
Whenever I prepare new projects, I find myself sharing/rehashing the same information to contributors. So here I’ve finally put it out to the public.
My process is
Draw on paper at larger size
Scan in grayscale/bitmap
Convert to grayscale
Do all my drawing edits (at the larger size)
Resize to working print-size
Convert to bitmap (50% threshold)
Convert to grayscale (so you can use...

Plan your project
Outline:
planning your project
considerations prior to jumping in
So you want to make an english language doujinshi for print…? Great!
Do not expect to make a lot of money. The best case scenario is that you will break even, while the worst case scenario is that you will spend a lot of money and have a mound of books left over, gathering dust in the corner of your room.
So, be...

How we got started in self-publishing
Outline:
How we got started
Explains our motivation
Here goes the most boring part of the blog to begin with: history of us.
This goes back to the beginning of popularization of the dial-up internet back in the latter half of the 1990s. I was obsessed with a boy band just like the average teenybopper, somehow I started drawing fanarts and posting them on the internet. It eventually turned...
